Where do you start?
Step 1 - Identify Your Local Chapter Membership
- Determine if an existing Local Chapter is already in your local area.
- Search for other companies or facilities in your area with whom you could establish a joint chapter.
- Identify potential members.
Step 2 - Make First Contact
- Contact potential members to guage their interest.
- Establish a planning committee.
- Identify a mentor/sponsor within your company or organization.
Step 3 - Develop a Plan
- Develop a mission or purpose for your chapter.
- Consider how your Local Chapter will serve the needs of its members, i.e. develop a strategic plan.
- Consider how your Local Chapter will serve the needs of your member's employers, i.e. develop a business case.
Step 4 - Build Corporate Support
- Decide if your Local Chapter will be supported by participating companies.
- Decide what type of corporate support you are seeking. Financial support? Time away from work? Advertisement in company newsletters?
- Share your business case with the companies that your Local Chapter will serve and ask for their support. Be specific.
Step 5 - Kick Off!
- Establish a Charter.
- Plan a kick off meeting.
- Invite all of your chapter's potential members. Try to be considerate of non-traditional work schedules.
- Involve management and more experienced professionals from the beginning. Invite them to your kick off!
Step 6 - Keep the Ball Rolling
- Develop a newsletter and hold regular meetings.
- Use local section reporting forms to report your activities to your management, corporate supporters, and the core.
- Share your successes with other chapters.
