Challenges Facing the Young Generation in Nuclear
Wednesday November 17, 2004 - 1:00 pm
Chair: Sama Bilbao y León

This session was cosponsored by the Operations and Power Division of the ANS.

This was a brainstorming session, where the particular challenges that limit the professional growth of young nuclear professionals, as well as potential strategies to address these challenges were discussed. In other words, the focus of this session was to generate a list of programs and activities that professional technical societies could realisticly implement to better address the needs of young nuclear professionals.

Based on the results of the survey that NA-YGN conducted earlier in the year, five main challenges were selected and were discussed at the session:

  1. Optimization of Knowledge Transfer Programs (This topic was a "hands-on" follow up of the NA-YGN morning session)
  2. Recruiting and Retention of Young Professionals
  3. Increasing Access to Leadership & Career Development Opportunities for Young Professionals
  4. Improving Industry Awareness Among Young Professionals (awareness of changes in regulations, technology, etc. and awareness of activities of other companies)
  5. Improving Networking and Interaction Among Young Professionals

The format of this session was:

  • The session chair briefly described the five challenges.
  • All attendees were provided with post-it notes so they could write down specific actions that could be taken to address these challenges.
  • Post-it notes were then anonymously adhered to posters hung around the room bearing the 5 topic headings with columns marked for actions by Young Professionals, Employers and Professional Organizations.
  • Each facilitator then presented the suggestions to the participants and led the discussion of how those suggestions may be implemented. As each facilitator led the discussion of his or her topic, another panelist was responsible for recording the suggestions and any salient points of resulting discussion in a PowerPoint file projected on screen.
  • NA-YGN has issued a report of the session summarizing all the ideas brought forward and will route it to all the interested parties.
